SportsDay’s Cowboys-Saints predictions: Will Dallas rally or crumble in Mike McCarthy’s absence?

The subhead for the 2021 NFL season is going to read “Still COVID But With Fans.” There will be a full house at the Caesars Superdome but no Mike McCarthy and Dallas will be missing other coaches and players due to the virus as well. Dan Quinn’s Atlanta experience of facing the Saints twice a year will pay off. He knows new starting quarterback Taysom Hill, and the Cowboys have enough weapons to avoid a third straight defeat.

Cowboys 21, Saints 13

The Cowboys obviously have their issues, but a quick glance at the Saints’ roster shows a season-long quarterback migraine, no defensive end Marcus Davenport, knee injuries to both starting offensive tackles, and star running back Alvin Kamara being limited in practice this week. If Dallas can’t outscore this bunch, the COVID-19 outbreak is only the start to its problems.

QB Dak Prescott said the Cowboys are “pissed” after losing their past two games and feel a sense of urgency, but they’ll be playing this week without head coach Mike McCarthy, who tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t make the trip to New Orleans. DeMarcus Lawrence’s return should help the defense, but with preparation scrambled in addition to other lingering injuries and illness, there is just too much to overcome this week.
