Smith: Mike D’Antoni should be one of NBA’s 30 head coaches

CP3’s Phoenix Suns then knocked out LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA playoffs and now hold a strong 2-0 second-round lead against Denver, after blasting the Nuggets 123-98 on Wednesday night.

Paul is two wins away from returning to the Western Conference finals for the first time since the Rockets went up 3-2 against the Golden State Warriors in the 2018 playoffs. I hope one of the greatest point guards in NBA history makes the Finals this season. He deserves it.

Another ex-Rocket who deserves a larger platform in 2021?

The coach with, by far, the best winning percentage in franchise history. The man that Daryl Morey trusted to get the best out of James Harden and the sideline leader who helped guide CP3 to the edge of the NBA Finals just three years ago.

Normally, I’d write that it’s absurd that Mike D’Antoni doesn’t have a head coaching job. But 2020 and the NBA bubble happened. And D’Antoni seems to have a pretty sweet job helping his former Phoenix point guard, Steve Nash, direct Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Harden toward the Eastern Conference finals. 

Heck, Brooklyn hasn’t even needed Harden in the second round. And who wouldn’t want to watch Durant up close night after night in the playoffs?
