SEATTLE — Versatile utility man Tim Lopes and outfielder Phillip Ervin — two players designated for assignment last week by the Mariners — were claimed off waivers on Tuesday and will join new teams.

Ervin was claimed by the Cubs, and Lopes was picked up by the Brewers. Ervin had been DFA’d last Wednesday and Lopes on Friday to open spots on the Mariners’ 40-man roster for free-agent signees Keynan Middleton and Chris Flexen.

Lopes, 26, was with Seattle for two stints after being drafted by the Mariners in the sixth round in 2012. The Los Angeles native spent the first five seasons of his pro career in the Mariners’ organization before being traded to the Blue Jays in 2016 for switch-pitcher Pat Venditte.

Lopes then re-signed with Seattle as a Minor League free agent prior to the ’19 season and made his Major League debut that year while batting .270 in 41 games as a midseason callup.
