It almost goes without saying at this point that the New Orleans Saints have a lot of challenges to navigate in 2022. We know they’re starting out well over the salary cap. They’re set up for a big offseason and plenty of changes, which is immediately more fun to look to than last year’s long summer of departures, cap cuts, and retirements. So much of the Saints offseason starts here. If Armstead’s contract isn’t extended by the start of the new fiscal year on March 16, he’ll enter unrestricted free agency and leave a whopping $12.9 million on New Orleans’ books in dead money — matching what the team already owes retired quarterback Drew Brees and last year’s salary cap casualty Latavius Murray, a combined $12.4 million. Put those figures together and it accounts for 12% of the 2022 salary cap.
