Guard Gary Payton II is set to sign a rest-of-season contract with the Warriors and fill the team’s final 15-man roster spot, a league source confirmed with The Chronicle.

Thursday’s news comes two weeks after Payton, 28, finished his second 10-day contract with Golden State. When that deal expired, head coach Steve Kerr said, “We are exploring our options as we wind down the season. There’s a chance that we would bring him back and sign him for the rest of the season. That’s the hope, but we have some things to consider.”

After converting forward Juan Toscano-Anderson’s two-way contract to a standard NBA deal and putting center Jordan Bell on that open two-way contract, the Warriors decided now is the time to bring back Payton. This is right around the two-week maximum that teams are permitted to have only 14 players on the 15-man roster.

Though majority owner Joe Lacob is still willing to spend big to win big, he likely wanted to wait to make certain roster moves so the organization could save as much money as possible. The Warriors lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of fan-less games during the coronavirus pandemic.
