It’s been so long since Dallas Eakins and the Oilers parted ways that the “former coach returning to Edmonton” angle pretty much died on the vine.

That’s probably for the best, since it was a bitter split on both sides after the rookie coach-rookie team experiment yielded little more than failure and frayed nerves and Eakins was fired 18 months into his four-year contract.

That was seven years ago. Since then, the Oilers had five different coaches, won Connor McDavid in a draft lottery, watched Leon Draisaitl grow into a superstar and built a new downtown arena.

Eakins, meanwhile, coached Anaheim’s AHL team in San Diego for four seasons before being promoted back to the NHL, where he is now in his third year behind the Ducks bench.
