Craig Bjornson, Jeremy Barnes round out Buck Showalter’s Mets staff

Buck Showalter’s first coaching staff with the Mets is officially complete.

The team announced Friday that Craig Bjornson and Jeremy Barnes have joined the staff, as bullpen coach and assistant hitting coach, respectively. Bjornson and Barnes join previously reported hires Joey Cora (third base), Wayne Kirby (first base), Eric Chavez (hitting) and Glenn Sherlock (bench). In addition, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner was retained from last season.

Bjornson, 52, has eight seasons of experience as a bullpen coach with the Red Sox and Astros. His most recent coaching stint came from Boston between 2018-20. He replaces Ricky Bones, who was hired by the Nationals this offseason.

Barnes, 34, served as director of player initiatives with the Mets last season. He was the Astros’ minor-league hitting coordinator in 2018 and 2019. He replaces Kevin Howard, who was moved to director of player development after last season.
