The Vancouver Canucks have placed Jake Virtanen on unconditional waivers in order to buy out his contract, general manager Jim Benning confirmed on Sunday.

The 24-year-old winger from Abbotsford has been on leave from the Canucks since May 1, after the team became aware of allegations of sexual misconduct by Virtanen.

The team hired an independent investigator to look into the allegations.

In May, the Vancouver Police Department confirmed they’d spoken with the woman who’d made the allegations and were investigating. On Thursday, VPD spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison confirmed the investigation was ongoing but had no new information to share.

A woman identified as M.S. has filed a civil lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court in Kelowna alleging Virtanen sexually assaulted her at a hotel in West Vancouver on Sept 26, 2017.
