For the time being, Nic Petan is filling in for Elias Pettersson.

With the Vancouver Canucks’ No. 1 centre in Michigan without a contract, someone has to skate with Nils Höglander and Brock Boeser.

And so far that’s been Petan, the crafty B.C.-bred centre who signed a one-year deal with his hometown team this summer.

It’s still hard to imagine a lineup that doesn’t include Pettersson when the season starts. Negotiations between the Canucks and Pettersson’s agent are ongoing, Pat Brisson told Postmedia Saturday.
