Xavier Simoneau had a feeling the Canadiens might select him at the NHL Draft on Saturday.

The 20-year-old centre from Saint-André-Avellin had been passed over at the draft the previous two years, mainly because he’s only 5-foot-7 and 175 pounds. He has played the last four seasons with the QMJHL’s Drummondville Voltigeurs, posting 73-155-228 totals in 204 regular-season games. The Voltigeurs captain finished fifth in the QMJHL scoring race during the 2019-20 season with 28-61-89 totals in 61 games. This season he had 10-27-37 totals in 27 games with the QMJHL season shortened because of COVID-19.

Simoneau met with the Canadiens on Thursday and was told they had him on their draft list after passing him over — like every other NHL team — the previous two years. He thought the Canadiens might take a chance on him with…
