49ers mailbag: Who might surprise by skipping OTAs?

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA – August 25: From left, San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks, Nate Sudfeld, Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance practice on Aug. 25, 2021, in Santa Clara, Calif. (Dai Sugano/Bay Area News Group)

Long story short, let’s cut right to this week’s submissions to the 49ers mailbag, via my social media inboxes on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok:

Is practice and two starts (last season) really enough for coach Kyle Shanahan to see that Trey Lance is ready/better than Jimmy Garoppolo? (@ronshizzle)

Shanahan certainly has a better vantage point now than a year ago, when Lance was a raw rookie from North Dakota State. This question is twofold: the Lance factor and the Garoppolo factor. The 49ers mortgaged their draft future to move up for Lance last year, and he’s surely eager to play a full season of games for the first time since 2019. Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery is keeping him out of offseason practices, which ramp up the next month, and he’ll still likely be eased into training camp while Lance gets more first-team reps to get ready/better.

Is everyone showing up at the OTAs? And by everyone, I mean a specific few who are top of the mind these days. (@ninalbean)

I’ll get back to you upon next Tuesday’s scheduled media access. Neither Garoppolo nor Deebo Samuel is expected to attend. Does the roll call include veterans Alex Mack, Trent Williams and Kyle Juszczyk?…
